The "ah-ha" moment came in 2011 while attending a presentation to healthcare professionals on a rare disease called mastocytosis. Tufts University professor Theoharis C. Theoharides spoke of research which had uncovered how mast cells are related to so many systems and disorders.
He drew an analogy based on the “canary in a coal mine” concept. Describing mast cells as the “canary in the body” he noted how mast cells can actually be an early indicator of other potential health disorders.
1. (idiomatic) Something whose sensitivity to adverse conditions makes it a useful early indicator of such conditions; something which warns of the coming of greater danger or trouble by a deterioration in its health or welfare.

Wanting to spread the word and help start the conversation about these little known cells, we set out to create fun and "groovy" graphic interpretations of mast cells to be printed on shirts. Dr. Theoharides reviewed, tweaked and named our first illustration “Mast Cells in Activation”.
Though initially constructed to sell some shirts in the hopes of uniting a growing community and spreading awareness for the little researched mast cell, MastCellAware.com soon grew into an opportunity to help educate as we continue to learn too.
If you've made a purchase, we hope you love your MastCell-A-Wear. A portion of every sale is donated in support of mast cell research and awareness. No funds received are ever used for personal gain. All remaining funds are reinvested to aid in the production of new mast cell awareness materials such as informational cards, flyers, and our own unique MastCellAware-designed products. From the very first shirt sold, our MastCellAware project has contributed to The Mastocytosis Society and mast cell research causes, while sharing A LOT of awareness along the way.
THANK YOU! for making a difference.
MastCellAware is passionate about raising awareness of the important role that mast cells play in all our lives. Our goal is to pique the interest of family, friends, and the medical community, while having a bit of fun with the image of the small but mighty mast cell.
